What If Every Cocoa Pod Could Help Shape a Child’s Future?
FEDCO PLC, in partnership with Sucden Foundation, Ferrero, the Material Innovation Centre (MIC), GIZ, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Portside International, and other valued partners, proudly joined the commissioning of the Cocoa Pod-to-Desk Project in Bukurusu, Twifo Praso.
This innovative initiative transforms cocoa pod husks—once considered agricultural waste—into durable classroom desks and seats, demonstrating how sustainability, innovation and collaboration can create lasting value for cocoa-growing communities.
Turning Agricultural Waste into Educational Opportunities
Beyond providing furniture for schools, the project showcases the power of the circular economy, where agricultural by-products are repurposed into practical solutions that support education, reduce waste and protect the environment.
By giving cocoa pod husks a new purpose, the initiative demonstrates how innovation can create meaningful opportunities for communities while contributing to a more sustainable cocoa sector.
Supporting Cocoa Farmers and Building Resilient Communities
Through the Ferrero Cocoa Sustainability Project, implemented with Sucden Foundation, FEDCO continues to empower 1,858 cocoa farmers across 50 communities in the Twifo Praso and Atobiase districts.
Working with 56 Purchasing Clerks, the project supports farmers through:
- Sustainable farming practices
- Livelihood improvement initiatives
- Preparedness for the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR)
- Initiatives that strengthen resilience and promote responsible cocoa production
FEDCO also played a key role by mobilising farming communities and facilitating the collection and supply of cocoa pod husks used to manufacture the desks.
This contribution helped connect cocoa farming communities directly to an innovative solution that creates value beyond the farm.
